Canada has no shortage of critical minerals. What it needs is a faster, more coordinated path from discovery to production. That was one of the central themes to emerge from Building Canada’s Critical Minerals Advantage: Capital, Infrastructure and Project Delivery, a forum co-hosted by Dentons and Invest Alberta during the Canada Investment Summit. The discussion brought together government leaders, investors, lenders, infrastructure specialists, project proponents and mining executives to examine what it will take to unlock Canada’s critical minerals potential.
While the conversation focused on mining and resource development, the broader message was about competitiveness. Critical minerals now sit at the intersection of economic growth, advanced manufacturing, energy transition, supply chain resilience and national security. Canada’s resource base gives it a meaningful advantage, but geology alone will not move projects forward. Success will depend on aligning capital, infrastructure, policy and partnerships to create a more predictable path to production.
This article provides an overview of the Forum’s main discussion points. Of course, these topics could also benefit from input from other governments and stakeholders, but given the time constraints, considerable ground was covered. The Dentons team is across this industry both in Canada and globally. The discussion had perspectives from many practice areas, reflecting the depth of the work we do in this industry.
